THE LORD
Rev. Msgr. Romano Guardini
Msgr. Guardini was a noted and well-known Catholic theologian and spiritual writer in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. His books are very clear, readable, scholarly but humble. In short, he is a joy to read. THE LORD is not so much a chronological rendering of the life of Jesus as it is a profound meditative work on who Jesus Christ is for all people. He is The Lord. Guardini organizes his book under various chapters which do reflect a time-line of Jesus’ life and teachings, e.g., Beginnings, Message and Promise, Road to Jerusalem, The Last Days, Resurrection and so forth. Each chapter, however, is fairly short. The effect of reading is not merely studying Christ, but walking with Him, listening to Him, and ending up being His disciple. This book is more meditative in style and useful for people on retreat. Christ is presented with wonderful balance in both His human and divine natures but with the conviction that Jesus Christ is uniquely the Son of God. I recommend Fr. Guardini’s book, THE LORD. As another theologian said: Those who read it will be “like the disciples on the road to Emmaus; they may well find their sluggish hearts burning within them as they read these eloquent pages dedicated to the Lord”.
