An effective and well-balanced library will always contain reference materials. I highly recommend one such volume, THE WISDOM OF CATHOLICISM. It is introduced and edited by the former President of the Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies in Toronto, Anton Pegis.
As a compendium, WISDOM brings together in one volume, sections or chapters from the writings of many of our Church Fathers, saints, theologians, philosophers, spiritual writers and literary authors. St. Ignatius of Antioch, St. Augustine, St. Bernard, Chaucer, Dante, St. John of the Cross, Pascal, Peguy, several Popes, Claudel, Dawson, Sigrid Undset, Maritain , E. Gilson, and many others are represented. The editor, Anton Pegis, was a friend of Jacques Maritain and Etienne Gilson, and with them led the revitalization of Catholic philosophical and literary thought in the early and mid- twentieth century. Pegis writes a wonderful introduction to these writers and their works, choosing what conveys some of the essential themes and issues of the Faith.
