Fr. Bouyer’s book takes a doctrinal approach to the study of spirituality. He begins by explaining what distinguishes Catholic spirituality and the spiritual life from other religions, Jesus Christ Himself. An authentic spirituality will be centered around and upon Jesus Christ. From here Fr. Bouyer starts with prayer as the basis of the spiritual life and proceeds to present valid and fruitful means for a spiritual life as well as false teachings and practices about spirituality which hinder its goal – union with God.
There are many, many materials on spirituality. To cut through all the hack themes and ‘moocher’ writers milking this subject, I strongly recommend Fr. Bouyer’s and Fr. Aumann’s wonderful, enjoyable, readable, and intelligent books for one’s library. May you grow in the Spirit and may your spiritual life be forever graced.
